Small Fry Basketball began in 1968 by dedicated youth leaders in Chicago Heights, Illinois. The organization hosted its first International Tournament in 1969 in Chicago Heights, Illinois. Although many of the original franchisees were based in the Midwest, Small Fry quickly branched east to New York, west to Lincoln, Nebraska, and south to Seminole, Florida. Outside of the continental United States, Small Fry has always been strong in Puerto Rico and has had participants from Santo Domingo and Bermuda as well. Now The International Tournament is held at Disney's Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Florida, during Easter week. Small Fry Basketball is for boys and girls who have not attained the age of thirteen prior to September first of the calendar year preceding tournament play and (varsity) does not exceed the height of five foot-one inch at the time of official measuring.
The Southwest Express Small Fry Basketball team competes at the varsity level of the Midwest Conference of Small Fry Basketball. The team competes in tournaments in and around the Chicago metropolitan area and Wisconsin. Small Fry is a highly competitive travel program and provides some of the best competition for this age and height anywhere. Southwest Small Fry is starting it's fourth year in the Joliet area. We are looking forward to the upcoming season.
Junior varsity is the entry level of Small Fry Basketball in the Midwest and Chicago Conferences. It is for boys and girls who have not attained the age of twelve prior to September first of the calendar year preceding the International Tournament. JV players may not exceed the height of four foot-eleven inches at the time of official measuring.
Our junior varsity is named the Knights and plays in the Chicago Metropolitan area. The are a feeder team to the varsity team. The Knights do not play at the International Tournament.
Southwest Small Fry is franchised by International Small Fry Basketball as a member in good standing and all teams under Southwest Small Fry Basketball Association are sanctioned to compete at their respective levels, varsity or junior varsity.
